Causes and Symptoms of Peroneal Tendonitis

Peroneal tendinitis occurs when the tendons running along the outer ankle become inflamed or weakened due to overuse, repetitive strain, or injury. These tendons, which connect the peroneal muscles to the bones of the foot, help stabilize the ankle, point the foot downward, and turn it outward. People with high arches, a history of ankle sprains, or those who frequently engage in running or sports involving quick pivoting are at a higher risk. Symptoms include gradual pain on the outer ankle that worsens with activity, stiffness in the morning, and discomfort when the foot is turned inward. A podiatrist can diagnose peroneal tendinitis through an examination and imaging, and provide treatment to reduce inflammation, correct abnormal foot mechanics, and restore tendon strength. In more severe cases, immobilization or surgery may be required if the tendon has significant tearing. If you have symptoms of peroneal tendinitis, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and appropriate treatment.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Kimberly Woodard, DPM from Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Treatment for Tophi Caused by Gout

Tophi are firm deposits that develop beneath the skin when uric acid crystals build up in the joints, often as a complication of long-standing gout. In the feet, tophi may develop around the toes, ankles, or Achilles tendon, creating swollen lumps that can interfere with movement, and cause pain if inflamed. Over time, untreated tophi can damage cartilage, tendons, and other soft tissues, making it difficult to walk comfortably and leading to stiffness or deformity. In some cases, the skin may become stretched and break open, leaking chalky material made of uric acid. A podiatrist can evaluate the extent of joint involvement to determine treatment. Options include reducing the size of the tophi or removing them surgically if they impair function. Surgery may also be considered if tophi are particularly large or threaten joint health. If you have developed tophi from gout, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and appropriate treatment options.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Kimberly Woodard, DPM from Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Causes of Itchy Feet

Itchy feet, also known as pruritus, can be an uncomfortable and distracting condition. Causes may include dry environments that strip the skin of moisture, infectious bacteria or fungi that irritate the skin, and underlying skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis. Symptoms often include redness, flaking, swelling, or persistent itching that may worsen at night. These issues can interfere with sleep, daily comfort, and overall foot health, if left untreated. A podiatrist can identify the cause of the itching through examination, testing, and tailored treatment plans to relieve symptoms and prevent recurrence. If you are struggling with itchy feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for effective relief solutions.

When a Baby Has an Ingrown Toenail

Babies can develop ingrown toenails when the corner of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, often affecting the big toe. Because infant nails are soft and flexible, they may sometimes appear ingrown when they are only curving at the edges. Signs of a true ingrown toenail include redness, swelling, tenderness, and, in some cases, drainage of fluid near the nail. Causes of ingrown toenails include nails being trimmed too short, rounded edges that grow into the skin, or pressure from tight shoes once the baby begins walking. If ignored, an ingrown toenail may lead to infection, making the toe more painful and swollen. A podiatrist can determine if the nail is truly ingrown and provide treatment to ease discomfort, prevent infection, and guide parents on proper nail care as their child grows. If your child develops an ingrown toenail, it is suggested that you promptly schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and treatment solutions.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Kimberly Woodard, DPM of Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.
