Causes and Symptoms of Turf Toe in Athletes

Turf toe occurs when the big toe is forced upward while the heel lifts, such as during a sprint or a sudden jump. This motion, which is common among athletes, strains the soft tissues surrounding the joint at the base of the toe. Playing on artificial turf increases the risk because the surface is firm and offers little shock absorption, which can make the toe bend back more unexpectedly. Sports that demand quick direction changes, pushing off the toes, or landing from a jump also place stress on this joint. Flexible shoes or flip-flops can make the big toe bend too far and lead to injury. A podiatrist can examine the toe joint, order imaging to look for damage, and offer treatment to protect the joint. If a tear is severe and pain does not improve, surgery may be needed to repair the area. If you have joint pain under the big toe, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Kimberly Woodard, DPM of Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Causes Toe Pain?

Most severe toe pain is caused due to a sports injury, trauma from dropping something heavy on the toe, or bumping into something rigid. Other problems can develop over time for various reasons.

Toe pain can be caused by one or more ailments. The most common include:

  • Trauma
  • Sports injury
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight
  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Corns and calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Blisters
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Sprains
  • Fractures (broken bones)
  • Dislocations

When to See a Podiatrist

  • Severe pain
  • Persistent pain that lasts more than a week
  • Signs of infection
  • Continued swelling
  • Pain that prevents walking

Diagnosis

In many cases the cause of toe pain is obvious, but in others, a podiatrist may want to use more advanced methods to determine the problem. These can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatments for toe pain and injuries vary and may include shoe inserts, padding, taping, medicines, injections, and in some cases, surgery. If you believe that you have broken a toe, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Risk Factors for Gout

Certain factors increase the chance of gout, which causes severe pain in the feet. High uric acid levels place stress on the joints, especially around the big toe where gout attacks often begin. The problem occurs when the kidneys do not clear uric acid waste efficiently. Eating large amounts of foods high in purines, drinking alcohol, or consuming beverages with high fructose corn syrup can raise uric acid even more. Extra body weight increases pressure on the feet and can contribute to higher uric acid levels over time. Some health conditions, such as kidney problems or metabolic issues, also raise the likelihood of a painful  gout flare-up in the toes or ankles. Wearing shoes that lack adequate support, or flip-flops to replace proper footwear, can place added pressure on an already irritated big-toe joint. A podiatrist can examine swollen joints, review flare patterns, and recommend supportive devices that help reduce strain on painful areas. If you have symptoms of gout, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and help managing this painful condition.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Kimberly Woodard, DPM from Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Runners and Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that occurs when the thick band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes becomes inflamed. Overuse, especially in runners, repetitive stress, or sudden increases in activity can lead to microtears in the plantar fascia. Symptoms often include sharp heel pain, particularly in the morning or after periods of inactivity, swelling, and discomfort when walking or standing for long periods. Risk factors include flat feet, high arches, obesity, improper footwear, and tight calf muscles. A podiatrist can diagnose plantar fasciitis through a thorough evaluation, recommend targeted treatments such as stretching exercises, custom orthotics, or supportive footwear, and provide strategies to prevent recurrence. If you are a runner and have persistent heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and treatment solutions.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Kimberly Woodard, DPM from Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Port St. Lucie, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

The intrinsic muscles of the foot play a vital role in shock absorption, protection of the plantar fascia, and guiding how force transfers from the ground back into the body, which is especially important for runners who place repeated stress on their feet. Keeping these muscles strong helps improve balance, stability, running efficiency, and overall foot health. Helpful exercises include toe crunches by curling your toes while keeping your heel down, calf raises by lifting your heels slowly while standing tall, and toe extensions by lifting your toes upward while the rest of your foot stays flat. These movements strengthen the small muscles that support your arch and reduce strain during long runs or speed work. A podiatrist can assess your running mechanics and create a personalized strengthening plan. If you experience foot pain, scheduling a visit with a podiatrist can help you stay injury-free and improve performance.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Kimberly Woodard, DPM from Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Truth About Broken Ankles

A broken ankle is a serious injury that occurs when one or more of the bones that make up the ankle joint fracture. It can happen from twisting the ankle during sports, falling, or direct impact such as a car accident. Symptoms often include immediate pain, swelling, bruising, and an inability to bear weight. The ankle may appear deformed, and the skin might feel warm or tight due to swelling. The pain can be sharp and constant, sometimes accompanied by a cracking sound at the time of injury. A podiatrist can help by examining the ankle, ordering X-rays, and determining the extent of the fracture. Treatment options include casting, bracing, or in severe cases, surgery to realign and stabilize the bones. Proper rehabilitation is also essential to restore strength and movement. If you suspect a broken ankle, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to ensure healing and long-term recovery.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact Kimberly Woodard, DPM from Pinnacle Foot and Ankle Centers, LLC . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  • Swelling around the area
  • Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.
